Safety Day

Everyone in agriculture knows someone whose life has been affected by a farm-related injury or death.

The statistics are sobering. Even more tragic is that these incidents could have been prevented if simple safety precautions had been followed. That's why the Progressive Agriculture Foundation is on a crusade for farm safety and health.

Elec SafetyAt the heart of this effort is the Progressive Agriculture Safety Day® program, formerly known as the Progressive Farmer Farm Safety Day Camp® program. Founded by The Progressive Farmer magazine in 1995, the program trains and provides the resources that local communities need to conduct one-day safety programs that are age-appropriate, hands-on, fun, and safe for children. While the basic program reaches children ages of 8 to 13, Safety Days may also be conducted for 4- to 7-year-olds or even entire families. Progressive Agriculture Safety Days® are conducted in the United States, Canada and the U.S. territories.

The Hardin County Extension Council hosted a one day “Safety Day” as part of the Progressive Agriculture Foundation safety campaign in September 2010. Over 325 4th grade students from five elementary schools (13 classrooms) participated in the one day session where volunteer professionals presented (14) different safety topics: ATV, Lawn Mower/Tractor, Fire, Meth, Chemical, Horse, Fire Arm, Dog, Bicycle, Electrical, First Aid, Water, Weather, Food Safety and Sun. The local FFA chapter provided 30 youth volunteers who served as group leaders, County Extension Homemaker Clubs assisted with food and registration while the local beef cattle association cooked beef burgers for lunch. Several local agribusinesses, health agencies, sheriff’s and local police offices, KY Equine Education Project and KY Beef Council helped to donate items for their goody bags and provided instructors for the various safety stations. As part of the Progressive Ag Foundation program, every student was given a t-shirt along with a variety of safety resource information for their parents.

Bike SafetyTeachers were extremely pleased with the program and feel that it is tremendous opportunity for them to participate. The Progressive Ag Foundation Safety Day program reaches more than 90,000 youth and involves 20,000 adult/youth volunteers. Thanks to a $500 grant from KY Farm Bureau we were able to purchase a permanent banner and additional signs. Groups must apply annually for the following year and attend mandatory trainings before hosting their event. Hardin County has been approved for another program in 2011 representing their 3rd consecutive year of participation.
